Learning to Learn: A Series on Hacking Your Own Brain

How, then, can we find the proper education and training to become experts in these fields? Though there’s not one training program fit for everyone, there is one thing we can all do: learn how to learn.

Ally Greer’s insight:

I recently decided that I’m going to change the way I think. Yep, that’s right - I’m hacking my own brain.

I’ve been inspired by so many people in my life lately and want to learn more about the things that I’m interested in. These things include, but aren’t limited to, community building, social media strategy, and entrepreneurship. There are so many people in my life - directly through personal relationships, or indirectly through blogposts and books - that know about what I want to know about, and I think it’s time I started learning.

I’m going to be changing the way I absorb information, ask questions, keep track of what I hear, see, and observe - I’m going to learn to learn.

Whether this means learning how to learn or learning for the sake of learning I’m not sure. Maybe it’s both. What I do know is that both of those goals are extremely important today and I’m sure there will be great value to be found in the process.

The things I share on this page will probably have a lot to do with this journey, so bear with me as I make this small pivot. At the same time, though, brace yourself for some serious knowledge intake; get ready to learn about building a business, changing the way you think, forming relationships, and being the best person possible.

In my opinion, one of the biggest parts of learning - and one that I’m trying extremely hard to focus on - is talking to others. Even if a conversation starts out without a goal, I know there’s more to be learned from conversing with other people than the majority of other methods of learning out there.

As someone who studied a second language for the better part of my life, I’ve always been fascinated by this phenomenon of words existing in one language and not existing in another.

Throughout my studies, I’ve had the most fun conversing with friends who spoke both English and French as well, because when I had a hard time finding the right word in English, I could just say it in French and it would be completely fine.

The fact that the English language tends to simplify everything by turning broad concepts into one or two short words actually takes away from the beauty and meaning that a language has the potential of having.

Reading the descriptions of the emotions in this infographic, I can think of a time when I’ve felt each and every one, and am fascinated by the fact that I could never actually put a word to it.
